Martin & Company was founded in 1989 as an independent investment counseling firm by A. David Martin, former Treasurer and Chief Investment Officer of the University of Tennessee System. Martin & Company began with three clients and $6 million under management. Today, the firm manages approximately $1.4 billion for approximately 100 clients. Martin & Company employs a total staff of 9, which includes seven investment professionals.
Martin & Company’s sole business is managing money on behalf of clients. The only source of revenue is fees paid by clients based on a percentage of the market value of assets under management. Our select group of clients includes pension plans, profit sharing plans, endowments, insurance companies, public funds, financial institutions, trusts, corporations and individuals.
In January 1998, Martin & Company became a wholly-owned subsidiary of First Horizon National Corporation and began providing investment management services to the Trust Division of First Tennessee Bank. Through contractual agreements, Martin & Company maintains autonomy in the execution of its business plans and its investment management process.
Although Martin & Company serves clients in nine states, the majority of client relationships are centered in the East Tennessee area. The firm is registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940.
Martin & Company does not take custody of client assets. Each client chooses a financial institution to provide custody of assets and other services that may be required in connection with the account. Martin & Company’s role is to direct the investment of client assets in accordance with objectives and guidelines approved by the client.
